BSR Definiton

British Social Realism is a genre of film all about real life and tries to give an accurate representation of the daily grind for people in a certain area. It covers themes such as; poverty, racism, crime, sexuality, and growing up. Many of the conventions of BSR films all are ways to try to add realism to the film for instance the use of real locations or unknown actors. A typical storyline for a British Social Realism would be about the life of a working or underclass person living in a derelict area just trying to get by. The definition of social realism is "The realistic depiction in art of contemporary life, as a means of social or political comment."  BSR films have used this definition and created films which follow it. There can be hybrid BSR films like Attack The Block which shows how hard life can be for people living in Estates but it also has the Sci-Fi twist of Aliens attacking.
